You unlock the door to your Florida home after being away for weeks or months. You bring in the luggage, turn on the lights and then you notice it.
Something smells…off.
Maybe it’s musty. Maybe it’s coming from the kitchen. Or maybe you can’t quite figure out where it’s coming from at all.
Homes that sit unoccupied for extended periods can develop odors for several reasons, especially in Florida’s warm, humid climate. While some are relatively simple to address, others can be an early indication that something needs attention.
Here are five possible reasons your Florida home doesn’t smell quite right when you return.
1. High Humidity Has Created a Musty Smell
That familiar “closed-up house” smell isn’t always just because the house has been empty.
Florida’s humidity can create ideal conditions for mildew and mold growth, particularly if indoor humidity has been too high or the air-conditioning system hasn’t been operating properly.
Closets, cabinets, bathrooms and rooms with limited airflow can be especially susceptible.
If a musty odor doesn’t disappear after you’ve returned and the home has had time to air out, it’s worth investigating rather than simply masking it with an air freshener.
2. A Plumbing Trap Has Dried Out
Here’s one many homeowners don’t think about.
The plumbing underneath sinks, showers and other fixtures typically contains water that helps prevent sewer gases from entering the home. When a fixture isn’t used for an extended period, that water can evaporate.
The result can be a surprisingly unpleasant odor when you return.
Running water through fixtures may resolve the problem, but a persistent sewer-like odor should be evaluated to make sure something else isn’t going on.
3. Something Is Lurking in the Kitchen
It doesn’t take much.
A little food residue left in the garbage disposal, something forgotten in the back of a cabinet, or an unnoticed spill can smell considerably different after sitting in a warm home for several weeks.
Trash cans and drains can also be culprits.
And don’t forget the dishwasher. Moisture or food particles left behind before closing up the house can create quite a surprise when you return.
4. The Refrigerator or Freezer Had a Problem
Imagine coming home after several months and discovering that your refrigerator lost power at some point while you were gone.
Unfortunately, your nose may tell you before anything else does.
Even a temporary power interruption or appliance malfunction can cause food to spoil. Ice makers, refrigerator water lines and drip pans can also sometimes contribute to unusual odors.
This is one reason checking appliances during visits to an unoccupied home can be so valuable.
5. There Could Be Hidden Moisture Somewhere
This is the one you don’t want to ignore.
An unfamiliar or persistent musty smell can sometimes be a clue that moisture is present somewhere it shouldn’t be.
A slow plumbing leak, roof issue, air-conditioning problem or water intrusion around a window may not be immediately visible.
Sometimes your nose notices the problem before your eyes do.
If an odor continues or you notice staining, dampness, bubbling paint or other signs of moisture, finding the source should be a priority.
Your Home Can Tell You When Something Has Changed
We usually think about looking for problems around a home.
But sometimes we need to smell for them, too.
A strange odor doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a serious problem. But when a home has been sitting empty, anything noticeably different deserves a little attention.
And that’s one of the challenges of owning a seasonal home: you can’t notice changes when you aren’t there.

At Seaside Home Management, our home watch services provide regular visits to your Southwest Florida property while you’re away.
A home visit isn’t just about making sure the doors are locked. It’s about noticing when something has changed — an unusual odor, unexpected moisture, an appliance problem, an air-conditioning concern or something else that wasn’t there before.

Because coming back to your Florida home should feel like coming home — not discovering a surprise.
